The 80-Prong Chasen (八十本立) is the classic all-purpose matcha whisk and one of the most widely used styles in Japanese tea preparation.
It is primarily used for preparing usucha (thin matcha), the 80-prong whisk is also capable of preparing koicha (thick matcha), making it a versatile addition to any matcha collection. The 80-tine design strikes an ideal balance between flexibility and durability, making it easy to create a smooth, fine foam while maintaining excellent control during whisking.
Every whisk is individually handcrafted, resulting in subtle variations that reflect the authenticity of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Why Choose a Nara-Made Chasen?
Nara's Takayama region has been the heart of Japanese chasen craftsmanship for over 500 years. Whisks made by local artisans are prized for their flexibility, durability, and precise workmanship, preserving a tradition recognized as a Japanese traditional craft.
Care Instructions
Before first use, soak the whisk tips in warm water for 30s-1 minute to soften the bamboo and help prevent breakage.
After use, rinse thoroughly with water only, do not use soap or detergents. Allow the whisk to air dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. For best results, store on a whisk holder (kusenaoshi) to help maintain its shape.
