Matcha Affogato Recipe — A Matcha Twist on an Italian Classic

As summer begins to wind down, there’s still time for one last icy treat. This season, we’re giving the classic Italian affogato a matcha twist: replacing espresso with a vibrant pour of freshly whisked matcha.

Recipe structure

Serves: 1
Prep time: 5 minutes

Ingredients
  • 2 scoops vanilla gelato or ice cream
  • 5g ceremonial matcha (recommend Aoarashi or Chigi no Shiro)
  • 30–40 ml warm water
  • Optional: a little roasted nuts
Method
  1. Sift the matcha into a bowl
  2. Add 30–40 ml of warm water and whisk until smooth and lightly frothy
  3. Place two scoops of vanilla gelato in a small glass or bowl
  4. Pour the freshly whisked matcha over the gelato
  5. Enjoy immediately, while the matcha is still warm and the gelato is slowly melting
  6. Buon appetito!
Which matcha is best for a Matcha Affogato?

For the best flavour, choose a rich, umami-forward matcha that can stand up to the sweetness and creaminess of the gelato. Aoarashi and Chigi no Shiro are both excellent choices, with enough depth and character to balance the richness of the gelato while allowing the matcha flavour to shine through.

There’s no need to add sugar or syrup, the natural sweetness of the gelato provides the perfect contrast to the matcha.
